In the mood for some authentic and amazing Japanese???

So tonight I visited Kushi D.C. located on 465 K St NW.  It’s a local joint for me (literally I walk just downstairs from my apartment).  From the minute we entered we were greeted with a huge smile from a very cute hostess (I hope you’re reading this).  We were seated and within a few minutes our server (Kevin) arrived.  Again friendliness and patience awaited us.  We started off with the chicken katsu, a deep fried chicken thigh.  It was delicious.  We then ordered a couple of beef short rib skewers, a duck thigh breast, salmon avocado sushi roll, and a grilled chicken sushi roll (a must have).  The food came at appropriate times, and the staff was excellent in removing dirty plates. We never had to ask for our water to be refilled and my beer came nicely chilled.  It was a very well run operation to say the least.  The staff was super friendly and the experience was great.  I would highly recommend you visit Kushi soon! In the mood for some amazing Asian Fusion?

This week’s restaurant review is for one of my favorite places to dine in D.C. SEI located at 444 7th Street NW provides Asian Fusion at its finest.  I’ve been there plenty of times, and can’t stop going back. The food is consistently satisfying and SEI places great emphasis on both fresh and extraordinary ingredients.  SEI provides a unique culinary experience, while balancing flavors that aren’t so foreign to the palette that they may not be recognizable.  For starters I would try the seaweed salad or the Dengaku Eggplant.  The Kobe Beef Sliders are amazing as are Korean Kalbe Tacos. As far as sushi goes, SEI provides an assortment of sushi that can’t be beat. My personal favorite are the fish and chips sushi, and I promise you’ll love them as well. Overall I would give my experiences at SEI an 8/10. I’ve linked the picture to opentable so you can make reservations soon!

When a $20 bottomless brunch isn’t what it’s all cracked up to be

This past Sunday I visited Local 16 on U St. I thought a $20 bottomless brunch sounded fun, and had heard good things generally about Local 16.  After being seated in the worst location possible, mind you we had reservations, the hostess kindly seated us out on the patio.  We thought this would be the beginning of an enjoyable brunch, but we were wrong. Our waiter aimlessly wandered around for 20 minutes, before realizing he had a table out on the patio. After ordering the salmon eggs benedict and bottomless mimosa we again mistakenly thought brunch could only get better.  Again we were wrong.  Our food was cold, not fresh, and tasted as if it had been served up the night before, only to be sent back to the kitchen.  Normally I wouldn’t complain about a mimosa, but that too was weak, and I ended up consuming more vitamin C then I had originally planned.  Local 16 can be an enjoyable brunch spot if seated in outdoor upstairs patio, where the ambiance seemed more fun. Overall I would give the experience a 4 out of 10, and suggest you look for other places for brunch.

Restaurant Review: Oyamel Mexican Cocina

Today’s restaurant review is for Oyamel Cocina in the heart of Penn Quarter. I’ve had dinner and drinks at Oyamel a few times, and if you’re looking for an authentic Mexican experience, this is the place. Inspired by Chef Jose Andres, need I say more; Oyamel provides dishes and delicacies not found anywhere else in D.C. I would suggest starting with Ceviche de peje-sol. For main courses, you can’t go wrong with Corvina roja a la Veracruzana, Bistec con mole amarillo y hongos, and Camarones al mojo de ajo negro.  If you’re up for something more adventurous try the Lengua guisada or Chapulines aka grasshopper tacos.  Finally, the mixologists at Oyamel are second to none and will serve up whatever you may be craving in a unique and inspiring way.
